Mumbai Weather Update: IMD Predicts Light to Moderate Rainfall with Thunderstorms and Lightning

Mumbai: The city continues to experience pre-monsoon showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across various parts of Mumbai on Friday, June 6, 2025. Overcast skies and intermittent showers have become a daily feature, bringing temporary relief from the heat but increasing humidity levels significantly.

According to IMD, suburban areas of Mumbai have been receiving more intense showers compared to the island city. On Wednesday, several regions, including Andheri, Borivali, and Mulund, witnessed light rain spells, while parts of South Mumbai saw only mild drizzle.

The IMD’s forecast also covers neighbouring districts like Thane and Palghar, where similar weather conditions are expected. A recent update from the Regional Meteorological Centre stated that isolated places in the Konkan region may also witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging between 30–40 kmph.

Mumbai is expected to record a maximum temperature of around 29°C and a minimum of 27°C on Friday. Humidity levels are likely to hover around 75%, making the weather sticky and uncomfortable for outdoor activities.

Being a coastal city, Mumbai’s proximity to the Arabian Sea significantly contributes to high moisture levels in the atmosphere. As summer progresses, the sea surface temperature rises, leading to more evaporation and increased water vapour in the air. This results in higher relative humidity, often exceeding 70–80%, making the weather feel warmer and more oppressive than the actual temperature.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) for Mumbai on Friday stands at 70, indicating moderate air quality. While most people may not be affected, those who are sensitive to air pollution—including children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues—may experience mild symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath.

AQI ranges:

  • 0–50: Good

  • 51–100: Moderate

  • 101–200: Poor

  • 201–300: Very Poor

  • 300+: Hazardous

Forecast for Saturday, June 7

The IMD has also issued a weather alert for Saturday, predicting scattered thundershowers across the city. Temperatures will remain steady, with a high of 30°C and a low of 27°C, keeping the overall climate warm and humid.
