Mumbai’s Marol Fish Market to Get ₹100 Crore World-Class Makeover

Mumbai, India: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a ₹100 crore redevelopment plan for the Marol fish market, transforming it into a world-class facility. Inspired by the Waterfront Market in Dubai and Sydney, the upgraded market will feature basement parking, a wholesale and retail fish market, a Koli Bhavan, an exhibition center, and a cafeteria.
Currently spanning 1.13 lakh sq. ft., the historic dry fish market has long been a key trading hub but suffers from leaking roofs, poor lighting, and deteriorating infrastructure. The redevelopment plan includes cold storage, waste recycling, parking facilities, and an auditorium, ensuring better facilities for fishermen, butchers, vegetable vendors, and traders.
State Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane recently reviewed the project alongside top officials, including Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and Fisheries Commissioner Kishore Tawde. The plan proposes a ground-plus-two-storey structure with an FSI of 5, maximizing space for multiple uses. A part of the funding will come from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, a government initiative to boost fisheries and promote sustainability.
