No Toll Tax for Two-Wheelers from July 15: Nitin Gadkari Dismisses Media Reports

New Delhi, June 26: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting that two-wheelers will be charged toll tax from July 15, 2025. Calling the reports "misleading" and "false", Gadkari clarified that the exemption for two-wheelers at toll plazas will continue as it is, and no new decision has been taken to change this policy.
“Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed. The exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue fully,” said Gadkari in a statement on Thursday.
He further criticized the irresponsible reporting by certain outlets, stating,“Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this.”
Following Gadkari’s clarification, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also issued a fact-check via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying:“#FactCheck: Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. #NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers.”
These denials come in response to widespread reports earlier this week that claimed two-wheelers would be brought under digital toll collection systems, starting July 15. The reports further alleged that the move was aimed at ensuring that all road users contribute to the maintenance of national highways.
At present, toll tax is levied only on four-wheelers and above, including commercial and private vehicles, with two-wheelers enjoying a full exemption.
Last week, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced the introduction of a FASTag Annual Pass for four-wheeler private non-commercial vehicles. The pass, costing ₹3,000, will be available from August 15 to streamline toll payments for frequent users.
With both Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and NHAI denying any move to levy toll tax on two-wheelers, the government has made it clear that the existing policy of toll exemption for two-wheelers remains unchanged.
