Pakistan and China Hold Military Talks on Counter-Terrorism and Regional Security

In light of increasing attacks on Chinese nationals in Pakistan, military officials from Pakistan and China held high-level talks focused on counter-terrorism and regional security. General Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), visited Pakistan with a senior delegation to engage in discussions with Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir.

The talks centered on mutual interests, enhancing bilateral defense cooperation, and strategies for regional stability. Both sides highlighted the rising attacks targeting Chinese nationals and the need for stronger counter-terrorism efforts. Despite Beijing seeking a more active role in securing its citizens, Pakistan emphasized mutual respect for sovereignty in their cooperation.

The meetings come as Pakistan intensifies its counter-terrorism measures following recent attacks, including a deadly ambush in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Over 300 Chinese troops are participating in joint anti-terrorism exercises, Warrior-VIII, aimed at bolstering operational capabilities between the two militaries.

The strengthening of Pakistan-China military relations is seen as pivotal, especially amid the ongoing challenges posed by separatist groups targeting Chinese workers involved in projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
