Poor Air Quality in Vasai-Virar: Dust, Construction Activities Choke the Region

The air quality in Vasai-Virar is rapidly deteriorating due to ongoing construction, demolition, and roadwork, causing thick layers of dust and worsening pollution levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has hit dangerous levels, exacerbated by weather changes that have increased fog and dust particles.

Local residents blame unregulated construction activities, open ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants, and uncovered garbage collection vehicles for the worsening conditions. Recently, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) took action against 12 RMC plants in the Sasunavghar area of Vasai East, issuing closure orders. Among those shut down were Oasis Infra, Rathore Bhagyajeet, and Excellence Readymix, following numerous complaints from local residents.

The pollution is further aggravated by cement plants along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway and extensive road renovations. AQI levels in Vasai and Virar have been crossing harmful thresholds, with readings above 200 deemed hazardous to health.

To mitigate the impact, the MPCB has directed the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) to implement stringent measures, including erecting barriers around large construction sites, covering demolition sites with tarpaulins, and ensuring that all construction vehicles are fully covered. Additionally, the VVCMC has been urged to monitor air pollution levels at construction sites and enforce cleanliness standards.

Environmental groups and local activists are calling for stricter penalties for non-compliance, as the constant dust emissions have begun to affect agriculture, coating trees, crops, and fruit-bearing plants in dust. With the winter season and festival time exacerbating the issue, residents are demanding urgent action to curb the pollution and protect public health.

The VVCMC has pledged to implement the MPCB's directives to improve air quality and mitigate the adverse effects of construction and demolition activities.
