Constitution Prepared in Two Years, 11 Months, and 18 Days

Every year, Constitution Day is celebrated on 26 November, as it was on this day in 1949 that India adopted its Constitution. After India gained independence on 15 August 1947, the need for a Constitution was felt. It took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to prepare the Constitution. The Constitution of India was formally adopted on 26 January 1950, which is celebrated every year as Republic Day.

Why Constitution Day is Celebrated on 26 November

The date of 26 November is observed as Constitution Day because it marks the birth of Dr. Sir Harisingh Gour, a senior member of the Constituent Assembly. The first Constitution Day was celebrated in 2015. Since then, 26 November has been observed annually as Constitution Day.

Why the Year 2015 Marked the Beginning of Constitution Day Celebrations

The year 2015 also marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment decided to celebrate Constitution Day from that year to pay tribute to Dr. Ambedkar. The main aim of the day is to spread awareness about the importance of the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar's thoughts. Dr. Ambedkar, who chaired the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, is credited with being the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The Constituent Assembly had 389 members, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was its president.
