Western Railway’s 6th Line Expansion: A Game-Changer for Mumbai's Suburban Train System by 2025

Mumbai, Maharashtra: In a major development for Mumbai's overcrowded suburban train system, Western Railway is set to complete the much-awaited sixth line between Bandra Terminus and Borivli by March 2025. This project, designed to significantly ease congestion and improve punctuality, will introduce a dedicated corridor that will exclusively handle mail and express trains, creating much-needed space on the local suburban lines.
Currently, the project is progressing in phases, with work on a 9 km stretch from Bandra Terminus to Goregaon completed in November 2023, and a 4.5 km stretch from Goregaon to Kandivli wrapped up in October 2024. The final stretch of 3.21 km from Kandivli to Borivli is set to complete the corridor, giving commuters a seamless and faster experience.
This upgrade includes the construction of a new rail corridor within the city limits between Kandivli and Borivli, bolstered by the acquisition of 424.5 sqm of private land at Borivli. Crucial infrastructure work is underway, including strengthening major bridges with pre-stressed concrete slabs and the relocation of hundreds of overhead masts and distribution cables. The elevated booking office at Kandivli is ready, marking another milestone in this massive overhaul.
Once complete, the project will boost the capacity of the Mumbai suburban rail network, allowing for increased train services and smoother operations. It’s a significant relief for the daily commuters of Mumbai, promising enhanced rail infrastructure and timely services as more trains are introduced to meet the ever-growing demand.
