Rapid Hardening Concrete to Be Used for Urgent Repairs of Gaymukh Ghat Road: Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao

Thane, July 15: In response to the deteriorating condition of the road from Kaju Pada and Chena Gaon to Gaymukh Ghat, Thane Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao has directed the immediate use of rapid hardening concrete for repairs to ensure durability during the ongoing monsoon season.

The stretch from Fountain Hotel towards Gaymukh Ghat has been severely damaged, with repeated repairs failing to withstand the rains. As a result, vehicular traffic in the area slows down drastically, forcing some vehicles to drive on the wrong side of the road. This has led to major traffic congestion, impacting the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Road up to Chinchoti and even Mira Road during peak hours.

This issue was highlighted by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat during a review meeting chaired by Commissioner Rao. It was noted that the basic road structure has eroded over time, rendering conventional repairs ineffective. Despite repeated interventions, the road continues to deteriorate due to heavy rain and vehicular load.

Executive engineers from Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) informed the Commissioner that their Public Works Department has been maintaining the road regularly, but the efforts haven't been sustainable. In view of this, City Engineer Prashant Sonagra proposed the use of rapid hardening concrete to repair potholes quickly and efficiently, even in wet conditions.

Commissioner Rao accepted the suggestion and instructed MBMC to immediately implement a pilot project using this material. Since rapid hardening concrete sets quickly, road repairs can be carried out without full road closures, thus minimizing public inconvenience.

"If this pilot succeeds, the entire ghat section will be repaired using the same method to ensure smoother traffic flow," Commissioner Rao stated. He also directed officials to coordinate with local police and deploy all available resources to complete repairs on a trial stretch within four hours.

The review meeting was held in the presence of several senior officials, including City Engineer Prashant Sonagra, DCP (Traffic) Pankaj Shirsat, Superintending Engineer of Public Works Siddharth Tambe, Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Tayade, Assistant Municipal Engineer Vikas Dhole, and Executive Engineer and Ghodbunder Road Coordinator Sanjay Kadam. Representatives from MBMC, MMRDA, and the Forest Department also attended.

Additionally, the Commissioner addressed pending roadwork on the Ghodbunder Road service lanes. Due to the monsoon, the integration of service roads with the main carriageway has stalled. While some stretches have been merged, gaps remain at various points. Rao directed the MMRDA to immediately inspect the entire Ghodbunder Road and ensure uniform road surfacing and repairs where needed.

The Public Works Department was also instructed to expedite repairs at critical junctions, including Kasarvadavali Signal, Ovala Signal, and under the Kapurbawdi flyover.
