Worli Traffic Control Helpline Misused for Threats: 5 Arrested in 2 Months

Mumbai, Worli: In a disturbing trend, the Worli traffic control helpline, designed to assist citizens in need, has been misused for making threats to high-profile personalities in Mumbai. Over the last two months, five such cases have emerged, prompting the police to tighten security measures.

The helpline, a vital resource used by thousands of commuters daily, was hijacked for threats on multiple occasions:

  1. December 8: Mohammed Beg Mirza, 36, was arrested in Ajmer after sending a threat regarding PM Modi, stemming from frustration at being sent home drunk after being denied work.

  2. November 3: A 24-year-old woman from Ulhasnagar was arrested for threatening Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, allegedly linked to a mental health condition.

  3. November 7: Sohel Pasha, 24, fabricated a threat demanding ₹5 crore from Salman Khan and another lyricist, seeking attention and fame.

  4. October 18: A vegetable vendor from Jamshedpur was arrested after jokingly threatening Salman Khan.

  5. October 19: A minor from Guwahati was detained after issuing a death threat to Salman Khan via the helpline but was later released after counseling.

Despite these alarming cases, Dattatreya Kamble, DCP, Zone 3, affirmed that the helpline remains critical for daily citizen support. While these threats are rare, the police are determined to hold culprits accountable without jeopardizing the public service the helpline offers.
