Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could soon help monitor traffic violations across India. Speaking at the 12th Traffic InfraTech Expo, he explained that the government is looking into AI and other advanced methods to improve road safety and streamline penalty enforcement.
The new proposal also includes innovative satellite toll systems, aiming to make toll collection more transparent and efficient. Gadkari highlighted the role of a specialized committee that will evaluate proposals from startups and tech companies. This expert panel will finalize its recommendations within three months, selecting the best ideas to bring rapid improvements.
With around 5 lakh accidents occurring annually, often involving young adults, Gadkari emphasized the urgency of adopting technology to reduce these numbers. He believes that leveraging AI and engineering solutions can help India achieve better road safety, reduce costs, and maintain high standards. Small companies with innovative tech will also be encouraged to participate in these projects through government tenders.
India’s road safety measures are set to evolve, with Gadkari reiterating that advanced technology is key to curbing the country’s annual loss of 3% of its GDP due to road accidents.
