Atishi Accuses BJP of Breaking Promise After Delhi CM Rekha Gupta’s First Cabinet Meeting

New Delhi, February 21, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi on Thursday accused Delhi’s newly-formed BJP-led government of failing to fulfill its pre-election commitment of providing ₹2,500 in monthly financial assistance to women. The allegation comes after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's first Cabinet meeting, which did not include the much-anticipated proposal to implement the scheme.
Atishi, who previously served as Delhi’s Chief Minister, claimed the BJP had misled the public by promising that the financial assistance program would be passed during the first Cabinet meeting. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), she expressed disappointment, stating, "The women of Delhi were waiting for this scheme, which the BJP promised to introduce immediately after taking office. But on the first day itself, they broke their promise."
She further accused the BJP of attempting to "cheat" the people of Delhi by failing to deliver on their election promises. "BJP has made up its mind to cheat the people," she added.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s Response
In her first official Cabinet meeting, CM Rekha Gupta and her ministers focused on other key agenda items, notably the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in Delhi. This was another major pre-poll promise of the BJP. Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive ₹10 lakh in health coverage, with both the central and Delhi governments contributing ₹5 lakh each.
Gupta also highlighted that her government would table 14 Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports in the newly-formed Delhi Assembly, reports that were allegedly blocked by the previous AAP administration. The BJP had criticized AAP for not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme during its tenure.
Addressing Atishi’s criticism, CM Gupta responded, "It's our government now; the agenda will be ours. Let us work. Atishi doesn't need to tell us everything; she has done what she had to do when in power."
As the Delhi government moves forward with its plans, political tensions between the BJP and AAP continue to intensify, with both parties positioning themselves to meet their respective promises to voters.
