BMC Initiates Process to Acquire Six-Acre Land in Lower Parel Following SC Ruling

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun the process of acquiring a six-acre land parcel in Lower Parel after the Supreme Court (SC) upheld its ownership. In a recent ruling, the SC rejected a proposal to transfer the land to Century Textiles & Industries Limited and confirmed that the land belongs to the BMC.
The land, estimated to be worth approximately Rs. 660 crores, was originally leased to M/s Century Spinning and Manufacturing Limited (now Century Textiles & Industries) in 1927 for 28 years. The lease expired in 1955, after which the ownership reverted to the BMC, but Century Mill had contested the transfer of the land.
Following a judgment by the Bombay High Court in 2022, which favored Century Textiles, the BMC appealed to the SC, which stayed the HC’s decision and, on January 7, 2025, dismissed the petition, confirming the land’s ownership by the municipal corporation.
Civic officials, led by Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjog Kabre, visited the site on Thursday to assess the condition of the property and begin the process of acquiring the land, which will be used for constructing homes for the weaker sections of society.
