Deadly Collision in Mumbai: Navy Boat Trial Under Scrutiny After Fatal Ferry Crash

Mumbai, India: A deadly collision between an Indian Navy boat and a ferry near Mumbai's Colaba coastline has claimed 14 lives and left several injured. The tragic accident occurred when the Navy boat, which was undergoing a trial run in the Arabian Sea, lost control and collided with the ferry en route to Elephanta Island. A seven-year-old boy is still missing, and the toll is expected to rise.
Mumbai’s Colaba Police have launched an investigation into the accident, questioning the safety of conducting such trials on busy maritime routes. Police have written to both the Indian Navy and the Maharashtra Maritime Board, demanding answers about the approval process and safety protocols for the trial. The Navy has initiated a Board of Inquiry to investigate further.
One critical issue being examined is whether the ferry was carrying more passengers than its allowed capacity. Authorities have made life jackets mandatory for all boat rides departing from the Gateway of India in an effort to prevent future tragedies.
As investigations unfold, the key questions remain: Who authorized the trial? Were safety measures followed? Could negligence have contributed to this fatal collision?
