First HMPV Case in Mumbai: Infant Recovers After ICU Care

Mumbai: Mumbai has reported its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), with a six-month-old baby girl successfully treated at Hiranandani Hospital, Powai. Admitted on January 1 with severe respiratory symptoms, including persistent coughing, chest tightness, and critically low oxygen levels (84%), the infant required intensive care.
Doctors diagnosed her using a rapid PCR test, which confirmed HMPV—a virus that mainly impacts children and the elderly. Since no specific cure exists, she was treated symptomatically with bronchodilators and discharged after five days in the ICU.
Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has not officially reported this case, they have stepped up citywide surveillance for influenza and respiratory infections.
HMPV, a lesser-known virus present for decades, primarily affects vulnerable populations but is unlikely to trigger an outbreak akin to Covid-19.
