Indian Coast Guard Seizes 6,000 kg Methamphetamine Near Andaman Islands

Port Blair, Nov 25 – In a significant anti-drug operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) intercepted a vessel carrying 6,000 kg of Methamphetamine near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The contraband, valued in crores in the international market, was packed in approximately 3,000 packets of 2 kg each.
The operation unfolded on November 23 when a patrolling Coast Guard Dornier aircraft detected suspicious activity near Barren Island, 150 km from Port Blair. Following a swift response, the trawler, with six Myanmarese crew members onboard, was apprehended and towed to Port Blair on November 24.
Preliminary investigations suggest the drugs were intended for India and neighbouring countries. A joint interrogation by the Coast Guard and local police is underway.
This marks another successful interception of illegal narcotics in the region, following similar seizures in 2019 and 2022. Methamphetamine, primarily used as a recreational drug, poses a growing threat in the region.
The Indian Coast Guard continues to maintain vigilant patrolling to curb illicit activities in Indian waters.
