Sambhal Mosque Violence: 3 Dead, Several Injured as Clashes Erupt During Court-Ordered Survey

Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh: Tensions flared in Sambhal district on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, leading to violent clashes that left three dead and several injured, including 24 police and administrative officers. The violence erupted when a mob pelted stones at the survey team and police, set vehicles ablaze, and fired bullets, prompting security forces to use tear gas and baton-charge to control the situation.
Key Developments
Casualties and Injuries: Three individuals died, with two confirmed bullet injuries from country-made pistols. Over 20 security personnel, including a circle officer and a deputy collector, sustained injuries.
Weapons Seized: Police detained 21 individuals, recovering various weapons and bullet shells of different bores from the site and nearby houses.
Security Measures: Internet services were suspended for 24 hours, schools shut for November 25, and entry of outsiders restricted to curb potential unrest.
Cause of Violence
The clashes occurred after the survey team completed their exercise. Groups from multiple directions pelted stones, leading to chaos. Police denied firing lethal weapons, stating non-lethal plastic bullets and tear gas were used to ensure the team's safe exit.
Historical Context
The survey stems from a court case alleging the mosque was built on the ruins of a Harihar temple destroyed in 1529 by Mughal emperor Babur. The survey, initially planned for last Tuesday, was rescheduled to Sunday to avoid interference with prayers.
Official Response
District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya assured strict action under the National Security Act (NSA) against those involved in the violence. “We will ensure justice is served,” he said, while police investigations continue into the origin of the firearms and the identity of the miscreants.
This incident highlights the volatile intersection of history and faith, necessitating peaceful dialogue and adherence to the law to prevent further escalation.
