Indian Tourism Minister Urges Expedited US Visa Process.

New Delhi, Indian nationals face a cumbersome process of getting a US visa, which is valid for 10 years and does not require frequent updates. To promote tourism between India and the US, swifter visa approval and more direct flights between the two countries are needed.
According to Suman Billa, Additional Secretary of the Union Ministry of Tourism, the best part about obtaining a US visa is that it is valid for 10 years, making it less likely to be repeated visits. However, long waiting times and disincentives for travel make it difficult to obtain a visa.
Billa believes that given the strong bilateral partnership and growth in travel between the two countries, there is significant headroom for progress in this area. He emphasizes the need to introduce more flights between India and the US, as the majority of the market is going through third countries, such as the Middle Eastern or European markets. Direct flights would make it more cost-competitive and add convenience to traveling into the US.
However, Jonathan M. Heimer, Minister Counsellor for Commercial Affairs, India, of the US Commercial Service, stated that the pace of visa application processing has gained momentum over the past year, leading to record visa issuances. The Attorney General of India, R. Venkataramani, stressed the need for responsible tourism and emphasized India's role in building a cohesive and peaceful world where tourism is a key factor.
