Kandivali-Borivali Rail Upgrade: WR Targets 6th Line by 2025

Kandivali, Borivali, Mumbai, Western Railway: The Western Railway (WR) suburban network is set for a significant boost as key land acquisition hurdles for the Kandivli-Borivali rail corridor are cleared. After resolving legal challenges, WR successfully secured 424.5 square meters of private land in Borivali, enabling rapid progress on the new sixth line, targeted for completion by March 2025.
The project forms part of a broader capacity enhancement initiative, including the fifth and sixth lines between Bandra Terminus and Borivli. The fifth line is operational, while phased construction for the sixth line has delivered crucial sections, such as Bandra Terminus to Goregaon (9 km, completed November 2023) and Goregaon to Kandivali (4.5 km, finished October 2024).
Ongoing work includes upgrades to Bridge No. 61 and the construction of an elevated booking office at Kandivali, with tasks scheduled during night blocks to minimise disruptions. Once complete, the revamped network will improve train capacity, punctuality, and passenger comfort, transforming daily commutes for Mumbai’s suburban rail users.
