Mahakumbh 2025: A ₹2 Lakh Crore Spiritual Spectacle Boosting Regional Economy

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: The grand Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, which began on January 13, is set to redefine economic benchmarks with an anticipated revenue of ₹2 lakh crore in just 45 days. Drawing an estimated 450 million devotees, this spiritual gathering is not only a religious extravaganza but also an economic boon for Uttar Pradesh.

Big Numbers Behind the Festival

The Uttar Pradesh government invested approximately ₹7,500 crore in the event, a move likely to spur regional growth. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimated significant contributions across sectors:

  • ₹40,000 crore from local hotels, guesthouses, and lodges.

  • ₹20,000 crore from food and beverages.

  • ₹20,000 crore from religious offerings like lamps, idols, and incense sticks.

  • Helicopter services, catering to 7,000 pilgrims daily at ₹5,000 per trip, are projected to earn ₹3.5 crore daily.

Each visitor, spending an average of ₹5,000, contributes to this massive economic surge spanning tourism, hospitality, retail, and local crafts.

Brands Seizing Opportunities

Prominent brands are leveraging the immense footfall to enhance visibility. Pepsico installed an illuminated 30-foot Mountain Dew bottle and 500 charging stations for pilgrims. Similarly, Reliance created rest camps along travel routes. Household names like Dettol, Dabur, Coca-Cola, and ITC have also set up stalls, showcasing products and engaging with attendees.

The Mahakumbh’s economic footprint is undeniable, from boosting local businesses to attracting global attention. As Prayagraj shines under the spiritual spotlight, it also exemplifies how tradition and commerce can go hand in hand.
