MNS Joins Local Protest Against Proposed 22-Storey Parking Tower at Matunga Station

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has voiced strong opposition to the controversial plan to build a 22-storey robotic parking tower outside Matunga station, joining locals in protesting the project. The issue centers around safety concerns, with residents calling the project a “hazard” in an already congested area.
In a letter addressed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), MNS General Secretary Snehal Jadhav urged the municipal body to immediately cancel the proposal. Highlighting the area's already strained infrastructure, Jadhav pointed out that the station, which sees a footfall of around 30,000 passengers daily, has only one exit. Nearby schools, colleges, and bustling markets add to the crowds, raising fears about possible disaster scenarios should an emergency arise.
"How will passengers escape in case of a disaster?" Jadhav asked, stressing the lack of consideration from the BMC and fire brigade for safety concerns. Furthermore, the letter argued that the area already has sufficient parking spaces, rendering the need for another parking tower unnecessary.
The multi-level parking project, proposed by former BJP corporator Nehal Shah, has also sparked concerns due to its location. Spread across a 1,518 sq m plot, it has recently received a no-objection certificate from Central Railways, despite protests from locals and political groups. With tensions rising, the BMC has said that it is “rethinking” the project in light of strong opposition.
The issue continues to stir debates over urban planning, safety, and transparency in project development in Mumbai.
