Mumbai Bus Crash: Driver Jumps Out of Window With Bags After Fatal Accident

Mumbai: Shocking CCTV footage from the tragic BEST bus accident in Kurla, Mumbai, has surfaced, showing driver Sanjay More collecting two backpacks and jumping out of a broken window after the bus mowed down seven people on Monday night.

The electric bus, operated by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), lost control, ramming into pedestrians and vehicles on SG Barve Marg. The crash killed seven people and injured 42 others, including four policemen on duty. Twenty-two vehicles were also damaged in the accident.

Video clips that went viral on social media depict chaotic scenes inside the bus, with passengers clinging to poles and handles as the vehicle went out of control. Once the bus halted, several passengers escaped through shattered windows.

Sanjay More, the driver, who reportedly underwent only 10 days of training to operate electric vehicles, has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Authorities have remanded him in custody until December 21.

In response to the incident, BEST announced mandatory breathalyzer tests for drivers and plans to strengthen EV training programs. Meetings with private contractors, who provide buses and drivers under a wet lease model, have been held to ensure stricter safety protocols and driver training.

Senior BEST officials have also initiated an internal investigation following a directive from the Maharashtra transport commissioner. A report will be submitted to the state government.
