Mumbai Commuters to Get 238 New AC Local Trains for a Cooler Ride

Mumbai, India:  In a major boost to Mumbai’s suburban railway network, Central Railway has announced the addition of 238 new air-conditioned (AC) local trains to enhance commuter comfort. The update was shared in Parliament on Wednesday, confirming government approval for procurement.

Currently, Mumbai's Western and Central lines operate 109 AC local trains, offering 65 services daily, including 13 new suburban routes. Since their launch on December 25, 2017, AC locals have gained immense popularity, especially during summer months, attracting over 300,000 passengers monthly.

While there were discussions to convert all regular local trains into AC coaches, the plan was put on hold after opposition from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in August 2022.

This expansion aims to provide a smoother, more comfortable travel experience for Mumbai’s ever-growing commuter population.
