Mumbai Horror: Scientist Mauled by Doberman & Pit Bull in Powai Society

Mumbai: A 37-year-old woman scientist was left severely injured after being viciously attacked by a Doberman and a pit bull inside Jalvayu Vihar CHS, Powai, on March 22. The brutal assault resulted in 20 stitches to her face and a complete nose reconstruction, with a chunk of muscle torn from her thigh.
The victim was standing in her building compound when a car carrying the two dogs arrived. While the pit bull was leashed, the Doberman’s status remains unclear. Suddenly, the pit bull charged at her, and before she could react, the Doberman knocked her down. Both dogs mauled her for nearly five minutes, while the owner, driver, and help allegedly did nothing to stop the attack.
Nearby residents eventually intervened and rushed her to the hospital. Speaking about the traumatizing experience, the woman stated, "This was a life-threatening attack. I thought I wouldn’t survive."
Dog Owner Blames Victim
Instead of showing concern, the dog owner, Divesh Virk, blamed the victim, claiming she had provoked the dogs by running—a claim she strongly denied.
Legal Action Taken
Following the Powai police investigation, an FIR was registered against Divesh Virk, driver Atul Sawant, and help Swati under Section 291 (negligent conduct with respect to animals) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). No arrests have been made, but notices have been issued for questioning.
Victim’s Appeal to Pet Owners
The woman has urged pet owners to be responsible, stating, "If a child had been in my place, they wouldn’t have survived. Always leash your pets in public."
