Residents Demand Probe Into Alleged Discrepancies in Krishna Nagar Nullah Desilting Work

Mumbai | May 28, 2025 Body: Serious concerns have been raised by local residents and civic observers over major discrepancies in the desilting work reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the Krishna Nagar Nullah in Marol’s K East Ward. According to official data published on the BMC’s website, a total of 1,102.25 tons of silt has been removed from the 2,278-meter-long (2.2 km) Krishna Nagar Nullah, using 72 trucks, and the desilting progress is marked at an astonishing 100.81% completion as of May 27, 2025. However, ground reality paints a different picture. A team of local citizens conducted an on-site inspection of various stretches of the nullah on Tuesday and found that several portions had not been desilted at all, while others showed only partial work. The team has submitted photographic evidence to support their claims.

“This figure of 100.81% is grossly misleading,” said a resident who was part of the inspection team. “It raises serious doubts about the authenticity of BMC’s records and the verification process of contractors' bills. Public funds may be at stake here.” In a further blow to the credibility of the operation, a video on the BMC’s official website showing the desilting work at Krishna Nagar Nullah depicted only two workers engaged in the process—an evidently insufficient workforce for such a large-scale project.

Locals are now demanding an immediate high-level inquiry into what they allege could be a case of misreporting and potential financial irregularities. “Public accountability and transparency in civic works are non-negotiable, especially with monsoon around the corner,” added another citizen, expressing concern about the impact of insufficient desilting on local flooding. As the BMC continues its pre-monsoon desilting operations across the city, this revelation from Marol has triggered calls for more stringent checks and community monitoring to ensure that taxpayer money is being utilized effectively and honestly. At the time of publishing, no official response from BMC representatives has been received regarding the allegations.
