Timely Evacuation Prevents Tragedy as Dongri Building Collapses

Mumbai:  A major tragedy was averted in Dongri on Thursday when a five-storey building, Noor Villa, collapsed after its tenants evacuated just hours before the incident. The building, over 40 years old, collapsed around 12:06 am. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

The collapse occurred at a private, non-cessed building housing 26 tenants and a landlord. Tenants took proactive steps to vacate the building after noticing unusual vibrations, despite the building not being officially declared dilapidated. Following the collapse, neighbouring buildings 32/33 Tantanpura and 103/106 JB Shah Marg were also evacuated as a precaution.

Local authorities have begun clearing the debris and temporarily shut down the narrow JB Shah Marg. Concerns over illegal construction practices have been raised by local authorities as well as the building's structural integrity.
