ICC Arrest Warrants and the Illusion of Justice in Israel-Palestine

The International Criminal Court's (ICC) recent arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif highlight an undeniable reality: while accountability is theoretically sought, justice remains elusive. The charges, encompassing crimes against humanity and war crimes, reflect the grim chapters of violence that have unfolded since October 2023.
For Netanyahu and Gallant, the accusations include deliberately targeting civilian populations—actions that align with decades-long practices of deprivation, displacement, and destruction against Palestinians. Yet, while the warrants send a strong message about the ICC's intent, they are unlikely to be enforced. Israel, refusing ICC jurisdiction, continues its historical pattern of impunity, buoyed by unwavering support from global superpowers like the United States.
This is not the ICC’s first attempt to challenge Israel’s actions. Previous investigations into alleged war crimes in Palestine were met with resistance and obstruction, including threats and covert operations against ICC personnel. These responses underscore Israel's determination to evade international scrutiny, while Palestinians endure unceasing violence under occupation.
Ultimately, while the ICC's actions mark a symbolic step toward accountability, systemic barriers and geopolitical dynamics suggest that justice, in its fullest sense, remains out of reach. For Palestinians, the fight for survival and recognition continues, as does the cycle of impunity for their oppressors.
