Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express completes 53 glorious years of service
Mumbai, May 17: The iconic Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, often hailed as Western Railway’s “Golden Train,” celebrated its 53rd anniversary with grandeur and nostalgia at Mumbai Central station on Friday. Since its inaugural run on May 17, 1972, the premier train has been a symbol of speed, service, and seamless connectivity between India’s financial capital and the national capital.
In a festive event organized by Western Railway, the Rajdhani Express was decked with vibrant floral decorations and flagged off amidst enthusiastic cheers from rail fans, railway staff, and patrons. A ceremonial cake-cutting marked the occasion, celebrating over five decades of the train’s impeccable service.
According to Shri Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, the Rajdhani Express has carved a special place in the hearts of passengers since its introduction. "This train continues to be a benchmark in punctuality, comfort, and service excellence," he stated.
Covering a distance of 1,380 km in just over 15 and a half hours, the Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani traverses through seven states, embodying the efficiency and evolution of Indian Railways. It was the second Rajdhani Express introduced in India, following the Howrah–New Delhi Rajdhani which commenced operations in 1969.
A Glorious Journey Through Time
Since its launch with just four Chair Cars, one First AC, and two AC Sleeper coaches operating twice a week, the Rajdhani Express has seen numerous upgrades:
-
1975–1985: Frequency gradually increased from three to five days a week.
-
1981: Became the first “Double Headed Rajdhani” with 18 coaches hauled by two locomotives.
-
1989: Made a six-day service and renumbered as 2951/2952, becoming the first train on Indian Railways to adopt the air brake system.
-
1992: Chair Cars replaced by modern 3-tier AC coaches.
-
2000: Began daily operations.
-
2003: Introduction of advanced LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches for greater safety and comfort.
-
2021: Became the first train on Indian Railways to run with Tejas-type Sleeper coaches.
Each milestone marks Indian Railways’ commitment to modernization and passenger comfort.
As the Mumbai–New Delhi Rajdhani Express embarks on its 54th year, it continues to be a pride of the Indian Railways network, linking two major metropolises with speed, elegance, and a legacy of excellence.
