Heavy Rains Lash Mumbai Today; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for City, Thane & Palghar

Mumbai, July 9: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on July 9, warning of continued heavy rains before a forecasted reduction in intensity from July 10 onward. An Orange Alert remains active for nearby Raigad, as monsoon systems continue to bring widespread showers across the region.

The current weather situation is driven by a low-pressure area moving from Gangetic West Bengal to Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh, intensifying monsoon activity across several Indian states. The IMD has sounded Orange Alerts for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, and Telangana from July 9 to 12.

Mumbai, which has already received 28% of its seasonal average rainfall, experienced significant waterlogging and traffic snarls due to relentless downpours. Despite this, meteorologists forecast a shift to light to moderate showers post-July 9, easing the flood situation gradually.

Other regions across the country have also borne the brunt of the heavy monsoon. Nagpur witnessed severe waterlogging, prompting the District Collector to declare a shutdown of all schools and colleges for the day. Ayodhya too was hit by intense rains, leading to disruption of daily life.

Looking ahead, the IMD predicts continued moderate rainfall for Mumbai and adjoining areas such as Thane and Palghar until July 14, though no major weather alerts are in place after July 10. Low-lying areas in the city remain vulnerable to flooding, and citizens are advised to exercise caution.

Elsewhere, East and Central India — particularly Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha — will see sustained heavy rains with thunderstorms and gusty winds until July 14. The Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra belts are expected to receive heavy downpours, while Northeast and South Peninsular India will also experience intense rainfall patterns.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents in vulnerable zones to stay indoors during peak rain hours and follow official advisories.
