Amid rising concerns over a COVID-like virus in China, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has gained attention globally. Health experts are warning about its potential impact, prompting many countries, including India, to stay vigilant.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that belongs to the same family as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza virus. First identified in 2001, HMPV is a leading cause of respiratory infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

The symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses. Fever,  Cough, Runny or congested nose, Shortness of breathing, Sore throat, Wheezing. Unlike COVID-19, which caused a global pandemic, HMPV cases have largely been limited to seasonal outbreaks.

India’s health ministry has directed states and union territories to strengthen surveillance for respiratory infections. Hospitals have been advised to ensure readiness with adequate resources, including isolation facilities, testing equipment, and antiviral medications. Health workers are being trained to identify and report cases promptly.

As India remains on high alert, the proactive measures undertaken by health officials aim to safeguard the population. Continuous monitoring and international collaboration will be essential in addressing any emerging threats posed by HMPV
