Kailash Gahlot Resigns from AAP, Claims Party No Longer Fighting for People's Rights

In a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), senior Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot resigned from the party, citing his growing disillusionment with its current direction. The resignation of Gahlot, who has been a key figure in the party and a trusted lieutenant of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, comes just months before the crucial Delhi Assembly elections, marking a significant political development in the national capital.
In his resignation letter, Gahlot expressed frustration with the party's shift from its foundational ideals, claiming that the AAP was no longer fighting for the rights of the common people. He wrote, “The party I once believed in, which was built on the principles of honesty, transparency, and accountability, has lost its way. I no longer see AAP standing up for the issues that matter most to the people of Delhi, and that’s why I am resigning from my position and from the party.”
Gahlot's resignation comes at a politically sensitive time, as Delhi prepares for the Assembly elections scheduled in early 2025. His exit from AAP has sent shockwaves through the party, as he was considered one of its most influential ministers and a popular face among Delhi’s electorate. Gahlot’s departure could have significant ramifications for AAP, which is gearing up for a tough contest in the upcoming elections.
The resignation has stirred reactions from both within the AAP and the opposition. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in a brief statement, acknowledged Gahlot’s contributions but expressed his disappointment over the resignation. Kejriwal said, "Kailash Gahlot has been a dedicated and hard-working minister. His departure is unfortunate, but we respect his decision. We will continue to work for the people of Delhi with full commitment."
Gahlot’s resignation is likely to prompt introspection within the party as it seeks to address internal rifts and rebuild trust with voters ahead of the polls. It remains to be seen whether Gahlot’s departure will spark a wave of resignations from other leaders or if it will serve as a wake-up call for AAP to recalibrate its strategy ahead of the crucial 2025 elections.
