Maharashtra Pioneers Drone Surveillance to Tackle Illegal Fishing Along 720-Km Coastline

Coastal Areas of Maharashtra: Maharashtra has set a significant precedent as the first Indian state to deploy drones for enforcing marine laws. On Thursday, the state launched a drone-based surveillance system aimed at curbing illegal fishing along its 720-km coastline. This move aims to effectively implement the Marine Fishing Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2021, enhancing the state's maritime security.
The Fisheries Department has acquired nine drones to monitor seven coastal districts, with a centralized control room in Mumbai overseeing operations. The drones will cover key locations, including Shirgaon (Palghar), Uttan (Thane), Gorai (Mumbai suburbs), Sassoon Docks (Mumbai City), Varsoli, Srivardhan (Raigad), Bhate and Mirkarwada (Ratnagiri), and Devgad (Sindhudurg).
These drones will patrol both the state's coastline and the 12 nautical miles of territorial waters. Their surveillance is expected to cover up to 120 nautical miles per day, gathering crucial data to serve as legal evidence against unauthorized boats. With coordination from the coastal police, authorities can now act swiftly, monitoring the sea through real-time drone footage.
Minister for Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane emphasized the strategic advantage of this initiative, stating, "The maritime area of the state will come under camera control, making it easier to curb illegal fishing."
With this innovative approach, Maharashtra is leading the way in marine law enforcement using cutting-edge technology, ensuring better protection of its valuable coastal resources.
