Mumbai Braces for Heavy Rains: IMD Issues Alerts as Lakes Near 60% Capacity

Mumbai, July 7 : Mumbai and its surrounding regions are set to witness intensified rainfall over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather alerts as the city records nearly 27% of its seasonal rainfall and lake levels touch the 60% mark.
According to the IMD’s latest forecast, Mumbai city and suburbs will experience a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of heavy rainfall at a few places. Very heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are expected at isolated locations over the next 24 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 31°C and 25°C respectively.
A Yellow Alert has been placed over Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy rainfall at a few places with occasional strong winds. In contrast, Orange Alerts have been issued for Raigad and Ratnagiri districts, indicating a higher likelihood of very heavy downpour. On Sunday, Palghar was under a Red Alert, while Thane was placed under an Orange Alert. Mumbai experienced moderate rain through the day, with some suburbs receiving heavier showers.
“Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Madhya Pradesh and its neighboring areas, the Konkan region and the ghats of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 5 to 9,” IMD Mumbai stated. The department also cautioned about thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by gusty winds of 45-55 kmph during this period.
Mumbai’s rainfall levels have significantly increased since mid-June, with the city surpassing its average rainfall for the month. As of now, the Colaba observatory has recorded 684 mm, and Santacruz has registered 649 mm of rainfall this season—substantially higher than last year’s figures of 558 mm and 443 mm respectively for the same period.
The rainfall has also positively impacted the water supply situation. As of July 6 morning, the collective water stock in the seven lakes supplying Mumbai stood at nearly 60% of their total capacity. The lake-wise water levels are as follows:
-
Upper Vaitarna: 71.50%
-
Modak Sagar: 75.46%
-
Tansa: 60.43%
-
Middle Vaitarna: 71.66%
-
Bhatsa: 50.19%
-
Vihar: 45.62%
-
Tulsi: 44.43%
The rising lake levels have brought much-needed relief to Mumbaikars, reducing concerns about water scarcity as the monsoon progresses.
The IMD has urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid low-lying and waterlogged areas, and stay updated through official channels. With rainfall activity expected to continue at varying intensities till July 9, residents are advised to plan their travel and daily routines accordingly.
