Mumbai : No Entry for Autos, Bikes, and Taxis Near Thane Station Platform 1 Due to Construction Work

Thane, February 15, 2025 – Commuters arriving at Thane Railway Station near Platform No. 1 will face significant changes in their travel plans as the Central Railway has announced that autos, bikes, and taxis will no longer be allowed to access the area. The move is a direct result of ongoing construction work, which includes micro-tunneling and pipe-pushing operations.
A banner was posted outside Platform No. 1 on Thursday, notifying passengers about the disruptions caused by the construction. The work aims to improve the station’s infrastructure but has temporarily closed the road leading to this crucial area. This construction is particularly significant as Platform 1 is the primary departure point for trains heading to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST), one of Mumbai's busiest routes. The platform is known for its heavy commuter traffic, especially during peak hours. The affected lane, previously used by vehicles for easy access to the station, had been a vital entry point for many passengers.
While the work has already begun, with visible activity by JCB machines, there is no timeline provided for the completion of the construction. The Central Railway has not specified when the restricted access will be lifted, leaving commuters uncertain about the future course of the project.
In addition to the ongoing work at Thane station, there are plans for further development in the area. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for leasing vertical airspace at Thane Railway Station in early January 2025. This development is part of the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS), in collaboration with the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The project includes the construction of an 11-storey commercial building (Tower-1) on a 9,000 sqm plot near Platform 10A. The building will feature a basement for parking, ground and mezzanine levels for railway-related facilities, a concourse for bus operations, and eight floors dedicated to commercial purposes.
The Central Railway has assured commuters that the long-term benefits of these developments will enhance both the transportation facilities and commercial infrastructure around the station. However, for now, the focus remains on the smooth execution of the ongoing construction and minimizing inconvenience to passengers.
Commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly and seek alternative transport options for accessing the station.
