Indian government issues high-risk alert for Google Chrome users

New Delhi, June 19: The Indian government has issued a high-risk security advisory for users of Google Chrome on desktop platforms, warning of multiple critical vulnerabilities that could allow remote attackers to execute malicious code or steal sensitive information. The alert was issued by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the country’s national cybersecurity agency.

According to CERT-In, the vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome versions prior to 137.0.7151.119/.120 for Windows and Mac and 137.0.7151.119 for Linux. These flaws may be exploited to compromise systems, cause denial of service (DoS), or expose confidential user data.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service (DoS) condition on the targeted system,” CERT-In said in its advisory. Both individual users and organizations operating on outdated versions of Chrome are at risk.

Google has acknowledged the security flaws and has rolled out a patched version of Chrome to address them. The company says the global rollout of the update is underway and will reach all users within the coming days.

To safeguard against potential exploits, users are strongly advised to update Google Chrome to the latest version without delay. Enabling automatic updates is also recommended to ensure the browser remains protected from future vulnerabilities.

Security experts warn that failure to update may lead to unauthorized access, data theft, and disruption of services—especially in organizational and enterprise environments where system compromise can have far-reaching consequences.

Steps to secure your browser:

  • Update Chrome to the latest version manually if auto-update is disabled.

  • Enable auto-updates for future protection.

  • Report any suspicious activity or browser behavior to Google or IT administrators.

With cybersecurity threats growing in scale and sophistication, timely updates and vigilance remain critical for ensuring digital safety.
