Parle-G Biscuit Worth ₹5 in India Sells for Over ₹2,300 in War-Torn Gaza

Gaza June 9: A heart-wrenching video from war-affected Gaza has gone viral, striking an emotional chord across the globe — particularly in India — after a father shared the steep price he paid to get his daughter her favourite treat: a pack of Parle-G biscuits.

Mohammad Jawad, a Gaza-based user on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posted a video showing his young daughter, Rafif, sitting on his lap as she slowly opened the familiar yellow-and-white packet of Parle-G and began to eat. Along with the video, Jawad shared an emotional caption: “After a long wait, I finally got Rafif her favourite biscuits today.”

What shocked many was the price he paid — more than €24 (approximately ₹2,342) for what he described as Rafif’s favourite snack. In India, a single pack of Parle-G is sold for just ₹5. It remains unclear whether Jawad referred to a single pack or a multi-pack, but the message was unmistakable: in Gaza’s current crisis, even the most basic foods have become scarce luxuries.

The video has since gone viral, generating a wave of empathy online. “More love and power to you, Rafif and everyone fighting for their everyday life,” one user wrote. Another commented, “There are numerous types of biscuits in the world, why does he specifically choose Parle-G? Because he can easily connect with the Indian mass and gain their favour,” expressing skepticism about the intent behind the post. Still, most reactions were deeply sympathetic, urging, “Keep her safe.”

Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, Gaza has remained under siege, facing a humanitarian catastrophe. Food supplies are dwindling, infrastructure has been decimated, and families are struggling to access essentials like water, electricity, and basic food items. Jawad’s post serves as a stark reminder of the on-ground reality: where even a humble biscuit symbolizes survival, memory, and a fleeting moment of normalcy amid chaos.

The post not only shed light on the dire food crisis but also brought attention to how something as ordinary as an Indian biscuit brand could become a symbol of comfort in a time of war. The story of Rafif and her Parle-G packet has resonated with thousands, sparking both solidarity and sorrow.
