Gateway of India: A Century of History and Significance

On December 4, 2024, the Gateway of India in Mumbai celebrates its 100th anniversary, marking a century of historical and cultural significance. Standing tall at 26 meters, this Indo-Gothic structure was built to honor the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Designed by Scottish architect George Whittet, the construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1924.
The Gateway has witnessed key events in India's history. It was the site of the last British army departure in 1948, signaling India's newfound independence. It has welcomed numerous British dignitaries, including Viceroys and Governors, and played a role in Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa in 1915.
The Gateway has also seen tragedy and resilience, especially after the 2008 terrorist attacks on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel across from it. Today, it remains a symbol of Mumbai's heritage and a major tourist attraction.
The area is not just about history; it’s also a hub for modern events. In 2023, Dior held an international show here, further solidifying its status as an iconic landmark. With Navy Day celebrated annually on December 4 and the frequent viral images of waves crashing against the Gateway during the monsoon, this historical site continues to be a focal point for both the past and the present.
