PM Modi Holds High-Level Emergency Meeting After Deadly Pahalgam Terror Attack; Vows Stern Action

New Delhi, April 23 – In a swift and decisive response to the gruesome terror attack in Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level emergency meeting upon his return from Saudi Arabia early Wednesday morning. The meeting, held at the Delhi airport, included National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
The Prime Minister was immediately briefed on the situation following the attack that claimed the lives of at least 26 people — most of them tourists — and left several others injured. The strike, which took place in the picturesque town of Pahalgam in south Kashmir on Tuesday, is being described as one of the most heinous acts of violence targeting civilians in the Valley in recent years.
In a strong message following the meeting, PM Modi vowed that those responsible for the attack "will not be spared" and assured the nation that every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and mourning across the country. Modi’s decision to cut short his official trip to Saudi Arabia underscores the gravity of the incident and the government’s intent to respond with urgency.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar on Tuesday evening to directly oversee the security review and ongoing counter-terror operations. Sources indicate that intelligence agencies are actively working to trace the handlers and executioners of the attack, with multiple security layers being reinforced in key areas of the Kashmir Valley.
Officials confirmed that this was a premeditated attack, targeting tourists in one of the Valley’s most visited summer destinations. The injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, and several are reported to be in critical condition.
As security forces continue their combing operations in the region, a state of high alert has been declared across Jammu and Kashmir. Additional troops have been deployed, and tourist movement is being closely monitored.
This tragedy comes at a time when the Valley was witnessing a gradual revival in tourism, with a significant rise in footfalls during the spring season. The attack has cast a shadow over the region's fragile peace and growing hopes of normalcy.
Authorities are expected to issue a formal update later today regarding the investigation and further security steps.
