Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation Unveils ₹2,694 Crore Budget for FY 2025-26 with ₹84.57 Lakh Surplus

Mira Bhayandar, February 15, 2025Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) Chief and Administrator, Sanjay Katkar, presented the ₹2,694 crore budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 on Thursday, showcasing a surplus of ₹84.57 lakh for the second consecutive year. This marks a significant milestone for the civic body, particularly as it has been operating without an elected body since 2022.

The new budget represents a substantial growth compared to the ₹1,562 crore budget in 2017, marking an increase of ₹1,132 crore over eight years. This year’s budget exceeds last year’s figures by approximately ₹397 crore. The projected revenue generation stands at ₹2,694.89 crore, including the previous balance, against estimated expenditures of ₹2,694.05 crore.

The MBMC plans to generate revenue through various channels, with property tax contributing the largest share, expected to yield ₹323.25 crore this year. Other key revenue sources include development fees (₹195 crore), GST grants (₹322.48 crore), stamp duty grants (₹61 crore), pending LBT arrears (₹25 crore), water bills (₹209.92 crore), fire department fees (₹59.48 crore), and advertisement rights (₹6 crore).

Despite a slight shortfall this year, the MBMC has focused on practical measures for fiscal responsibility, including a strategy for increasing revenue generation, reducing avoidable expenses, and improving basic facilities across the city. Additionally, the budget highlights plans to improve infrastructure with a network of cement roads, better air quality, and enhanced social welfare initiatives.

Key welfare projects include the establishment of more dialysis units at municipal hospitals, adding 50 more beds, and creating a new neonatal care unit at the Mira Road hospital. Furthermore, the administration has expressed a commitment to enhancing the quality of education for municipal school students and providing social welfare schemes for women empowerment.

In response to staffing concerns, Katkar acknowledged that 1,321 out of 2,704 sanctioned posts remain vacant. Administrative expenses, including salaries for 1,383 staffers, have amounted to ₹192.59 crore.

The budget's emphasis on health, education, infrastructure, environment, and transparency highlights the MBMC’s commitment to improving the city’s overall quality of life and meeting the growing needs of its residents.
