Mumbai: Unemployed Youth Moves Bombay High Court Over Delayed Government Job Despite Appointment Letter

Mumbai, June 26: In a striking example of bureaucratic delays affecting livelihoods, a youth from Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district has approached the Bombay High Court after being kept unemployed for over eight months, despite receiving a valid appointment letter for a government-assigned role.

Sumedh Shivaji Jadhav, a postgraduate in English Literature, was selected as an Assistant Project Officer under the Maharashtra Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) through S2 Infotech International Limited, a private contractor appointed by the state government for staffing and administrative services.

Jadhav was issued an appointment letter on October 10, 2024, and the very next day, S2 Infotech formally informed the Deputy District Magistrate of the EGS branch in Sindhudurg about his selection. However, despite fulfilling all necessary formalities, Jadhav was never officially appointed or assigned responsibilities.

Frustrated by the prolonged silence and repeated visits to government offices without resolution, Jadhav filed a petition in the Bombay High Court, seeking judicial intervention. He has demanded that both the Maharashtra State Government and S2 Infotech be ordered to implement his appointment immediately.

The petition highlights that, under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Jadhav discovered that the post of Assistant Project Officer at the Sawantwadi EGS office has been vacant since April 1, 2025. Despite this clear vacancy and his official selection, Jadhav remains unemployed due to administrative apathy.

In his plea, Jadhav argues that he is being deprived of his livelihood and that such delays are not only unjust but also reflect a lack of accountability in contract-based government recruitment processes. He urged the court to ensure transparency, fairness, and timely execution of appointments, particularly in schemes aimed at providing employment.

The matter is now under consideration by the Bombay High Court, which is expected to hear the petition in the coming days.
