Mumbai Weather Update: City Witnesses Pre-Monsoon Showers, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Mumbai, May 17 – The city of Mumbai and its surrounding regions woke up to overcast skies and intermittent showers today, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h. This shift in weather marks the onset of pre-monsoon activity in the Konkan coastal belt, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heat.
The IMD has predicted continued cloudy conditions through the day, with chances of rain and thundershowers in the evening or night. The maximum temperature is expected to touch 34°C, while the minimum could dip to 26°C, offering relatively cooler conditions compared to the recent heatwave. At 9 AM today, the temperature was recorded at 29°C, with 70% humidity, 6 km/h winds, and a 5% chance of precipitation.
Weather Across the Region:
-
Mumbai: Cloudy skies with occasional moderate rain. Thunderstorms expected later in the day.
-
Navi Mumbai: Partly cloudy with dry conditions; temperature between 28°C and 33°C.
-
Thane: Some areas experienced drizzle early today; dry and cloudy conditions to persist with temperatures ranging from 28°C to 35°C.
-
Palghar: Similar weather patterns with temperatures between 25°C and 33°C; farmers advised to prepare for potential rain.
Air Quality Improves:
In a welcome development, Mumbai's Air Quality Index (AQI) has improved significantly. According to data from the Sameer App of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), today’s AQI stands at 88, falling in the ‘Satisfactory’ category. This marks a noticeable decline in pollution levels, likely aided by the rain and wind.
Forecast for May 18:
Looking ahead, the IMD has forecast similar weather for May 18, with temperatures expected to range from 26°C to 33°C. Overcast skies will dominate, with a possibility of rain or thundershowers in the evening or night.
The pre-monsoon conditions are bringing much-needed relief to Mumbai and adjoining regions, setting the stage for the expected arrival of the southwest monsoon in early June.
